Watervliet School Board adopted a campus wide Wellness Policy in 2006 that addresses foods served outside of the federal lunch and breakfast program. If you would like to participate on our School Wellness Committee, please contact June Altom at 269-463-0799. To view that policy click here.
Our Menus
We occasionally get questions about some of the items on our menus such as chocolate milk, pizza, chicken and potatoes.
Did you know:
-our pizza has whole grain crust and reduced fat pepperoni and low fat cheese? This is not your average pizza parlor pizza!
- most of our breaded chicken products are made with whole grain breading?
- 85% of the breads and buns that we serve are at least 51% whole grain?
- none of our schools have deep fat fryers, so our chicken and potato products are not fried? Some of the potato products
have a light coating on them to make them crispy in the oven.
- all of our schools serve a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily for students to choose from?
- all of the breakfast cereals that we offer are reduced sugar and made from whole grains?
- we follow strict USDA guidelines for our menus that meet or exceed those guidelines?
- our ala carte selections at the Middle & High Schools are also regulated by USDA?
- our chocolate milk is fat-free and of its 18grams of sugar - only 6 grams of that is added sugar the other 12grams occur in the milk naturally? We also offer white milk in 1% and skim varieties for your students to choose from. We chose to reformulate rather than eliminate our flavored milk. Studies by the American Dietetic Association show that student milk consumption goes up when given the option of flavored milk.
There is no one single food or beverage that replaces all of the calcium and nutrients found in milk!
Healthy Hints for Students and Parents
Eat a variety of foods from the 5 food groups (vegetables, fruit, dairy, breads/grains and lean meats and seafood).
Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables.
Make half or more you grains, whole grains by choosing whole grain foods such as: whole wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice and low-fat popcorn.
Include 2-3 servings every day of low-fat or fat free dairy, such as: yogurt, skim milk and low fat cheeses.
Vary your veggies by choosing dark green and orange vegetables like spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes and carrots.
Go Lean with protein by choosing lean and low-fat proteins like eggs, chicken, turkey and fish. Bake or broil instead of fry - or bring out that grill.
Limit extra sugar by drinking beverages and foods that are naturally sweet - try a little peanut butter and honey on sliced apples for a treat to satisfy any sweet tooth!
Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Walk, run, play sports or dance around the room for a good aerobic workout.
Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces of plain water each and every day!
